Strengthening Ties between APBIPA Bali and BIPA Balai Bahasa Makassar

On 31 July 2009 Nyoman Riasa, Program Director of APBIPA Bali and M. Bundhowi visited Balai Bahasa Makassar to meet with its BIPA Team members: Ratnawati (Coordinator), David G. Manuputty, Jusmianti Garing and Rahmatiah. The purpose of the meeting was to share most up-to-date information on BIPA issues and discuss possibilities of implementing APBIPA programs for eastern Indonesia.

BIPA Balai Bahasa Makassar (BBBM) is now providing Indonesian language and cultural studies for overseas students wishing to study in Makassar. The students have the option of staying with a host family or rent a room, whichever is more convenient to them. In addition, students wishing to study Indonesian with the Balai has easy access to the provincial library and a museum. At the moment the Balai is still its finishing stage for the completion of their budget guest house to accommodate forthcoming students.

The Makassar BIPA Tem is also finishing their supplementary Bahasa Indonesia readers focussing on the culture of South Sulawesi. By reading this book and doing exercises developed the team, one will be able to explore the cultural elements in Bugis, Makassar, Mandar and Toraja ethnic groups of South Sulawesi Province.

APBIPA Bali will always be happy to assist BBBM in editing and refining their drafts that the team is able to produce to suit the needs and characteristics of BIPA learners. It is also discussed during the visit that Balai Bahasa Makassar would be able to collaborate with relevant BIPA stake holder for the establishment of APBIPA for South Sulaswesi.

During the visit APBIPA Bali Team was also lucky to meet briefly with Dr. Dendy Sugono, Director of National Language Centre and his staff Ibu Yeyen. Dr. Dendy Sugono stopped in Makassar on his way from Gorontalo to inaugurate the opening of Balai Bahasa Gorontalo.
