English Refresher Course for SMPN 10 Denpasar

  A group of 20 teachers of SMPN 10 Denpasar were involved in a crash program – a 12-hour English language training. The training was designed and delivered by Nyoman Riasa and M. Bundhowi of ULearn International Education.

The training program was conducted at SMPN 10 Denpasar in the same classroom used by the students. The program consisted of two 2-hour sessions with a 30-minute break in between. The first session started at 1 pm when it was extremely hot and the second session began at 3.30pm. Everyday the training program concluded at 5.30 in the afternoon.

During a brief introduction prior to the first session on Thursday, January 21st, Bapak Ketut Sartono informed that participants that the course was the realisation of a program discussed between the school and ULearn International team since 2008.

The first session of the first day was taught by Nyoman Riasa who introduced the teachers, who were mostly non-English teachers, with a simple techniques of practising speaking skills at students’ pace using a very simple material design. This was then followed by an interesting way of learning English grammar through communicative language games.

At the beginning of hiss session Nyoman Riasa informed all the participants that in the next two hours he would like to prove that everybody in the classroom would be able to speak English fairly easily.

The second session of the first day was taught by Bunhowi who explored his cartoons as a means of teaching and learning English. Students were involved in describing parts of the bodies and even learnt grammar points cartoon strips and pictures.

The second day, 22 January, was wholly Bun’s session during which students were taught how to draw cartoons to teach various subjects including math, science, languages as well as sociology. Students did not only enjoy the classroom activities but also forgot the steaming day.

The last two sessions on Saturday, January 23rd, was taught by Nyoman Riasa who explored language learning activities to enhance other aspects of learning. He introduced activities that did not only trigger language practice but also encourage students to apply and develop their own learning strategies. At the end of every activity Nyoman discussed the language components being learnt, learning strategis being performed by the participants and pedagogical concepts underlining the activity.

The training program was concluded with a certificate ward to the participants by Ni Nyoman Tripitasih, the Director of ULearn International Education.
