Training Methodology Workshop for Senior Tourist Guides
In collaboration with Indonesian Tourist Guides Association (HPI) Nyoman Riasa and M. Bhundowi of ULearn International Education delivered a 2-day training workshop. The focus of the workshop was to improve training methodology component of HPI Training for Trainers programs for its senior members.
This national workshop was conducted on 30-31 July 2009 organised South Sulawesi Tourist Guides Association. It was officially opened by the President of the Association, Drs. I Nyoman Kandia and attended by 30 tourist guides from different provinces including Banten. In his opening speech Kandia said that it is time for tourist guides to share their knowledge and skills to those in need. He further indicated that there is always a great role the association should be able to train professional tourist guides for the country in spite of similar programs offered by tourism schools in Indonesia.
As a professional facilitator for methodology training programs Nyoman Riasa stipulated that it was almost impossible to train professional tourist guides trainers in one day. Therefore, he strongly emphasised that this workshop should be aimed at laying down strong and solid foundation for the development of a sound training for trainers course specifically designed for tourist guides. Concepts on collaborative learning, learner centre, interactive as well as problem solving are vital for trainers to master. Riasa repeatedly emphasised that a training program or workshop largely based on story telling (lecturing) is not an effective techniques to enhance the mastery of skills in delivering a training program.
While Nyoman Riasa laid the solid foundation for effective trainers for tourist guides, Bundhowi focussed his teaching on the practical sides of the course. He demonstrated a number of teaching techniques that actively involved participants’ participation. Through his session the participants were involved in activities to improve their language proficiency.
The training program was concluded with a dinner hosted by organising committee and a certificate award for participants. In his closing session, Hawwid Raden, indicated that tourist guides should keep improving their new skills including the ones in developing and delivering training programs.
